Return to Nature Funeral Home was a Colorado-based provider located in Penrose, Colorado, within Fremont County. Owned by Hallfordhomes LLC, the facility operated from 2019 until 2022. It eventually became unlicensed following a cease-and-desist order in 2023.
The funeral home gained national attention when authorities raided the Penrose facility in October 2023 after reports of foul odors. Investigators discovered nearly 190 decomposing bodies stored in abhorrent conditions without refrigeration. While the business promoted eco-friendly green burials, many families were provided with fake ashes and false assurances regarding the final disposition of their loved ones. Following the investigation, the Fremont County Coroner confirmed that the remains were removed from the site on October 13, 2023.
